Do the Yankees have Advanced Scouting?

Obviously, they do, but the way that they pitched to Carlos Delgado today seems as though they have not been paying much attention.

Anyone who has been following the mets, even just a little, could tell you that Delgado’s bat speed has really slowed down, and he has had a very difficult time getting to hard stuff on the inner part of the plate.

Let’s take a look at how the yankees approached Carlos Delgado today.

1st AB – 1st inning, Runners on 1st and 2nd two out

Delgado hits 1st pitch Fastball to Deep Right Center Field

Delgado swings at a first pitch fastball and flies out to deep right center field.

2nd AB – No Body on, 1 out

Delgado Strikes out Swinging on Slider after being pounded inside

Delgado swings and misses at a low and away slider after being pounded in the entire AB.

3rd AB – Men on first and third 1 out.

After seeing nothing but away away away, he reaches out and hooks the ball into RF for a double scoring two runs.

4th AB – Bases Loaded two out

Again, everything is middle of the plate away, and he ends up hitting a low fastball on the outside part of the plate deep into the Right Center Field Bleachers.

5th AB – Runners on first and third, 1 out

Basically just a cookie, right down the middle which he drills into the Right Field stands for a 3 run homer and his 9th rbi of the game.

Be interesting to see if the Yanks with Mr. Ponson on the mound change this approach tonight.

  1. Didn’t see the game, but this seems like an excellent observation. I wonder how much of it was standard strategy by the coaching staff that missed Delgado’s weakness, and how much of it was just Giese not getting the job done when asked.

  2. 1st AB Ponson got in on his hands and he dribbled it weakly to first base.

  3. Ah, I love it when a theory gets confirmation!

  4. Yeah.. even though the 2nd AB ended up in a walk you could see that he really cant handle the pitch in on his hands, Ponson just not really able to hit his spots with consistency.

  5. 3rd AB they stayed away from him, but stayed down and almost out of the zone where he couldnt really do much with it.
